Quand la nuit a commencé à descendre, Nour a eu peur et il a touché l’épaule de son père. L’homme l’a regardé sans rien dire, en souriant un peu. Ensemble, ils se sont mis à redescendre la colline vers le lit du torrent desséché. Malgré la nuit qui venait, leurs yeux avaient mal, et le vent chaud brûlait leurs visages et leurs mains. L’homme titubait un peu en marchant sur le chemin, et il dut s’appuyer sur l’épaule de Nour. En bas, au fond de la vallée, l’eau des puits était noire. Les moustiques dansaient dans l’air, cherchaient à piquer les paupières des enfants. Plus loin, près des murs rouges de Smara, les chauves-souris volaient au ras des tentes, tournaient autour des braseros. Quand ils arrivèrent devant le premier puits, Nour et son père s’arrêtèrent encore, pour laver soigneusement chaque partie de leur corps. Puis ils ont dit la dernière prière, tournés vers le côté d’où venait la nuit.

As the night started to fall, Nour got scared and touched his father’s shoulder. The man looked at him in silence with a slight smile on his face. Together, they started to walk back down the hill towards the dry torrent bed. In spite of the coming night, their eyes hurt and the hot wind burnt both their faces and their hands. The man was staggering a little as he walked on the path and he had to lean on Nour’s shoulder. Deep down in the valley, the wells’ water was dark. Mosquitoes danced in the air and tried to sting the children’s eyelids. Further along, near the red walls of Smara, bats were skimming over the tents and were turning around the braziers. When they got to the first well, Nour and his father stopped again in order to wash thoroughly every part of their bodies. Then they said the last prayer, turned towards the side where the night came.
